The Los Angeles Lakers refuse to just give Pau Gasol away in a trade, something that could benefit them in the coming weeks.
Jabari Davis of Basketball Insiders believes the Lakers will trade Gasol before the February 20th deadline and the same teams who’ve refused to part with assets will finally improve their offers.
If I were a betting man (which I’m not…for good reason haha), I might lean toward him being dealt. Trouble is, they have to find the right deal for him…..
I have a feeling the same teams that have played hardball with the Lakers in the past, offering 20 cents on the dollar…will be more inclined to work through a deal as the deadline approaches. If I’m the Lakers’ FO, I’m probably counting on that.
Unless the Lakers plan to eat into some of their cap space next season to re-sign Gasol (a very real possibility) there’s no reason not to trade him. Gasol’s still a very serviceable player, so the hesitation to trade the power forward is understood, however if the Lakers have any plans of using their cap on a free agent, you don’t want Gasol taking away a portion of that space.
