The University of Tennessee released a statement on Friday announcing a new partnership with Nike that will begin on July 1, 2015.
(So those sweet and simple smoke-gray uniforms the Vols debuted last season? Yeah, expect something wackier in the future.)
Since 1997, the Volunteers have been partnered with adidas. That arrangement will stay in place until the eight-year deal with Nike commences.
Dave Hart, the university’s vice chancellor and director of athletics, offered a brief statement about the new partnership:
We were very thorough and deliberate in assessing and evaluating our options with our apparel partner decision. NIKE is the right partner for the University of Tennessee moving forward. We appreciate our current partner and the strong relationship we have had for many years. We will continue to work together through the end of the existing contract (UT Sports).
The university’s decision is a major blow for adidas. The apparel company saw their 16-year partnership with Notre Dame end earlier this month when the school decided to strike up a deal with Under Armour.
