Buster Posey bulks up for 2014

The San Francisco Giants do not want conditioning to be the reason for any shortcomings in 2014.

Shortly after we learned that third baseman Pablo Sandoval shed weight to better endure the long season, we hear that catcher Buster Posey has gone the other direction.

Posey says that he has bulked up, gaining about 10 pounds. Citing fatigue for his struggles near the end of 2013 (.244/.333/.310 in the second half), Posey believes he is now better equipped for the long season.

Manager Bruce Bochy is optimistic that 2014 will be better for the beefier Posey as well (quotes courtesy of Chris Haft of MLB.com):

He was tired last year…He’s smart. He knows what he needs to do, as far as any adjustment in this game. … You never arrive as a player. I’m sure Buster feels like that, whether it’s throwing, blocking pitches, calling a game or the offensive side. The one area he wanted to focus on was build some strength. And he’s done that.”

Posey, who is reportedly at approximately 214 pounds (if that makes a difference to you), seldom talks about these kinds of issues. He is mostly a guy who puts his head down and does the work, something he hopes he can do better in the second half of 2014.
