UFC 169 prelims results: Chris Cariaso and Alan Patrick pick up UD victories

The UFC’s annual Super Bowl weekend event is finally here. UFC 169 has arrived, and the highly anticipated main card is just moments away. Prior to the pay per view card, the UFC put together an exciting undercard for free on Fox Sports 1.

First up is a Flyweight battle between Chris Cariaso and UFC newcomer, Danny Martinez. Martinez has fought under the Zuffa banner before. At WEC 37, Martinez lost a decision to Joseph Benavidez. Martinez is currently on a four fight winning streak, and is looking to make a statement tonight. Cariaso is making his ninth UFC appearance tonight. His last time out he snapped a two fight losing streak by defeating Iliarde Santos by TKO in the second round.

The main event of the Fox Sports 1 prelims is a Lightweight showdown between John ‘The Bull’ Makdessi and undefeated prospect, Alan Patrick. This fight has fireworks written all over it, and could determine the next prospect in the crowded Lightweight division.

John Makdessi vs Alan Patrick
Patrick immediately looked for the takedown, but Makdessi stuffed it. After a short exchange, Patrick again threatened a takedown, but Makdessi stuffed it again. Both men threw spinning techniques, but neither land. Patrick attempted a capoeira kick. Huge takedown from Patrick in the last minute of the round, but Makdessi gets to his feet quickly. Makdessi seemed very timid in the first round. Patrick rushed in for another early takedown, but Makdessi stuffed it again. Patrick with another huge shot and takedown, but Makdessi gets right back to his feet. Makdessi clipped Patrick with a left hook. Patrick’s pace slowed significantly in the second round. Makdessi was comfortable to pick Patrick apart from the outside. Patrick landed a stinging left hook to open the final round. Makdessi eats a head kick that lands flush on his chin. Patrick is tripped late by Makdessi. Patrick back to his feet, but he can’t do much on the feet. Patrick clinches Makdessi on the fence, but does nothing with it. The ref breaks them apart and the fight ends with an uneventful exchange.
Official Decision: Alan Patrick defeats John Makdessi by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Chris Cariaso vs Danny Martinez
Martinez immediately rushed in for a takedown to start the fight. Cariaso stuffed it and landed a few head kicks. Most of the round was contested on the feet with Cariaso picking Martinez apart from the outside. Martinez got a takedown late, but could not do much with it. Cariaso got to his feet, but Martinez slammed him again to end the round. Martinez was winging big haymakers to start round 2. Martinez landed a left hook and went for the takedown again. Cariaso’s takedown defense was solid and he broke off the cage. Cariaso landed a big head kick. Martinez again tried for the takedown, and finally gets it. Cariaso got back to his feet, but Martinez tried to hit the takedown again. They came out swinging again in the third round. Cariaso clipped Martinez and Martinez clipped Cariaso. Once again, Martinez attempted a takedown, but could not get it. Martinez was just throwing wild haymakers, while Cariaso was landing on the outside. Martinez once again attempted the takedown on the fence. Again, Cariaso was able to stuff it. They struck a bit more, and Martinez again had his takedown stuffed. Dreadful fight.
