Awful news to report out of Mexico City as boxer Oscar ‘Fantasma’ Gonzalez has died.

Gonzalez fought Jesus Galicia Saturday evening in a televised main event billed as a WBC silver featherweight title fight, though suffered a 10th round knockout in the process. Gonzalez remained on the ground after being knocked out as medical personnel rushed to his aid.

He was taken from the ring via stretcher to an awaiting ambulance but less than 24 hours later, the 23-year-old boxer passed away.

Gonzalez had vital signs, but little brain activity after the last medical report issued on Sunday night. Canelo Promotions president Eddy Reynoso confirmed the death of Gonzalez to by telephone and greatly regret this loss for boxing. “Boxing is very hard when it claims lives but also helps to save lives. At this point we must be united and in solidarity,” said Reynoso.

The boxer was reportedly being kept alive by machine until his family could arrive.

Our thoughts are with the Gonzalez family.
