Carolina Hurricanes could trade Cam Ward according to sources

Since winning the Stanley Cup as a rookie back in 2006, Cam Ward has been one of the few mainstays for the Carolina Hurricanes. He won the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoff MVP that year, and has been the No. 1 goalie for the Hurricanes over the last eight seasons.

Carolina has a logjam in net though, and with Anton Khudobin playing so well it appears that the team could be taking calls for Ward. General manager Jim Rutherford was on Sportsnet The Fan 590 in Toronto recently, where he spoke about his goaltending situation at length. transcribed parts of his conversation, where he examined the goalie carousel between Ward, Khudobin and Justin Peters:

There’s enough interest in any one of the three. I think the real question is, do we carry three or do we make a move and move one? The biggest thing for me is if we move one, it makes it better for two goalies. With three goalies, they just don’t get enough practice time, they don’t get their own net. That’s a decision we’re going to have to make prior to the deadline.

According to TFP, Ward would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to get a fresh start elsewhere. He has two seasons remaining on a deal that carries a $6.3 million cap hit, as per That’s a sizable risk for any team to take on considering Ward hasn’t exactly been a pillar of strength over the last two seasons.

Making things even more interesting are the contracts of Khudobin and Peters—both expire at the end of this campaign. If Carolina moves forward with a Ward trade but can’t lock up either of those goalies, things could get messy heading into the 2014-15 season.
