Florida State’s Jameis Winston named a preseason All-American in baseball

The accolades keep coming for Florida State’s Jameis Winston. The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner and offensive MVP of the BCS National Championship has been named a preseason All-American… in baseball.

Winston was named to Baseball America’s All-American third team.

Teammates Luke Weaver and D.J. Stewart also were named to the publication’s team. Weaver, a starting pitcher, was named to the first team while Stewart, an outfielder, was placed on the second team.

Winston’s first taste of collegiate athletics came on the baseball diamond last season. He appeared in 41 games, making 32 starts. He batted .235 as right fielder, left fielder and designated hitter. As a pitcher, Winston made 17 appearances as a reliever. In 27 innings pitched, he went 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA and struck out 21 batters.

This year, Florida State manager Mike Martin is going to use Winston as the team’s closer and give him at bats off of the bench and as a designated hitter.

Florida State will open their baseball season on February 14 when they host Niagara.
