The transition of Microsoft into a new era continues with news that the company has promoted Satya Nadella to the role of CEO, meaning the company has finally found a replacement for Steve Ballmer who stepped down six months ago.
Variety reports that Nadella was most recently was executive VP of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group and he was hired after interviewing over 100 potential candidates both within Microsoft and outside the company. Nadella’s promotion means the company decided to stay in-house with its new CEO hire, something that Bill Gates noted in his statement about the changing of the guard.
“During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” Bill Gates said in a statement. “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth.”
Gates will be remaining with Microsoft despite stepping down as chairman. He’s expected to stay on as a technical advisor to Nadella and will still be active in board decisions but he has simply taken a reduced role that allows him to continue his philanthropy and other endeavors.
Microsoft is a company that is once again starting to compete with the lies of Sony and Apple but are still the third or fourth option on the technology market, something that Nadella will no doubt be looking to change.
