It looked like the dramatic recruitment of 5-star defensive end Malik McDowell might finally come to an end when he committed to the Michigan State Spartans on Wednesday morning.
McDowell always wanted to sign with the Spartans, but his family preferred that he leave the state of Michigan and his mom even said as much on a local radio show in Detroit.
Malik’s parents must not have given him their blessing before McDowell made his announcement because as of Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio’s press conference at 5:00 pm EST, McDowell was not included among the Spartans’ signees.

At first it appeared that McDowell’s mother wanted him at Michigan, but that was before the family decided they wanted McDowell to leave the state. That means they’d like for him to play for one of his other two finalists, the Florida State Seminoles or Ohio State Buckeyes.
The 6’7, 290-pound McDowell is considered the third best strong side defensive end in the country, according to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings.
