Referee accused of changing story after Cristiano Ronaldo red card

Cristiano Ronaldo

La Liga referee Miguel Ayza Gamez has been accused of changing the reason for sending of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo on Sunday, according to reports in Marca (via Eurosport).

Marca are reporting that referee Gamez initially told his colleagues that Ronaldo was dismissed for raising his hand to Athletic Bilboa’s Carlos Gurpegi, but reported to the Football Federation that the Real Madrid forward was instead sent off for clashing with Ander Iturraspe. That confrontation immediately followed the contact with Gurpegi, and Iturraspe was shown a yellow card.

Real Madrid are understood to be planning an appeal against the red card, citing a double-standard in comparing the yellow for Iturraspe but the red card for Ronaldo, with the change of reasoning further fuelling their desire to have the decision overturned.
