Manchester United are planning a summer transfer bid for Newcastle’s Ivorian midfielder Cheick Tiote as they attempt to rebuild their midfield, report the Daily Star.
They are also believed to be interested in signing Portugal international William Carvalho, who currently plays for Sporting in Portugal.
Following David Moyes’ attempts to sign Tiote during his time as Everton manager, it would appear that his interest has not wained since moving to Old Trafford. The defensive midfielder would add some steel to the United midfield, and could be a long term replacement for Michael Carrick, or Marouane Fellaini
There are a few obstacles standing in the way of any potential move. Firstly, Newcastle would have to replace Yohan Cabaye (who moved to Paris St Germain on transfer deadline day) and Tiote in the summer. Then there is the fact that United would have to spend about £25m ($40m) on a central midfielder for the second season in a row, having already spent big on Fellaini (pictured above).
Moyes’ interest in Carvalho isn’t surprising, since the 21-year old is rated as one of the best prospects in world soccer. However, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also said to be interested, and Carvalho would cost £37m ($60m) to meet the release clause in his contract.
