Okay, we’ve officially reached the point where weird news coming out of Sochi can no longer be described as “surprising.”

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, pop duo t.a.T.u. will be performing at the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics.

In case you don’t remember t.a.T.u., here’s a little refresher:

The duo, comprised of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, built their entire image around being the type of faux-lesbians — neither of the women are gay — that drive 15-year-old dudes wild. Considering Russia’s stance on “gay propaganda,” the inclusion of t.a.T.u. in the opening ceremonies is bizarre on multiple levels. First, you have the duo’s avowed support of gay rights, a position that stands in contrast to the political position of the Russian state. Considering this, it’s easy to read the inclusion of t.a.T.u. as a sort of “concession” on the part of the Russian government, which, if indeed the actual impetus, is problematic because not only does having a “lesbian” pop group perform not magically erase the mistreatment of Russia’s LGBT community, but any sense of a positive “gesture” towards the LGBT community is also torpedoed by the only-lesbian-to-entertain-horny-guys nature of t.a.T.u.

So…yeah. WTF, Sochi?
