Iowa State adds two new coaches, including Tommy Mangino, to staff

The Iowa State coaching staff added two new faces on Thursday, and one of them should look pretty familiar to offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Mark Mangino.

Along with Brandon Blaney, Tommy Mangino was one of the coaches hired. Tommy, who will coach the wide receivers for the Cylcones, is the son of Mark.

In an official statement, head coach Paul Rhoads said he’s confident the younger Mangino will have a positive impact on the team:

Tommy has earned the opportunity to be an assistant coach at this level. He is mature beyond his years. We received tremendous recommendations from Division I coaches that he’s worked with and been around. He will be a solid addition to our staff.

While the idea of a father and son coaching together may seem odd, it’s a tradition that’s already been established at Iowa State: Wally (father) and Shane (son) Burnham are members of the coaching staff, with Wally serving as defensive coordinator and Shane coaching defensive tackles.
