The long-waited announcement of David Beckham’s MLS team came today, as Miami will begin play in 2017.
Mlssoccer.com is reporting that NBA star LeBron James could be part of the potential ownership group. The current group is made up of Beckham, Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure, and Simon Fuller. When asked about the possibility of James joining the group, Claure said “There are lots of people who want to be apart of this group…” Beckham has stated multiple times that he considers LeBron James a great “friend” and “businessman.”
The prospect of two global sports stars owning an MLS team is certainly intriguing. Major League Soccer would certainly receive an international spotlight for its ownership, not to mention Manchester City and NYCFC. Miami would also be one of the most wealthy franchises in MLS, and perhaps all of American sports. The Beckham brand will sell by itself, and the addition of LeBron James could finally make Miami a true “soccer town.”
