Sochi Winter Olympics: Airlines warned of toothpaste threat

Sochi police

Just in case you weren’t already wary enough about Sochi, the Department of Homeland Security is warning airlines flying to Russia that terrorists may try to smuggle explosives on board in toothpaste tubes.

According to reports in The Guardian, the threat was passed on to airlines that have direct flights to Russia. Per he report, airlines were warned that explosive devises could be assembled in flight or upon arrival in Sochi. In a statement the department said it was not aware of a specific threat to the US.

Security forces in Russia are on high alert after suicide bombings killed 34 people in Volgograd in December. The US military has offered support to Russian security and police forces to secure Sochi.

Delta is the only US airline that has direct flights to Moscow, though Russian airlines Aeroflot and Transaero operate nonstop flights between Russia and the US. United, the ‘official airline of the US Olympic team’ is operating charter flights to Sochi, since it doesn’t usually have flights to Russia.
