Mike Cammalleri hasn’t been getting the same amount of attention as Thomas Vanek or Ryan Callahan lately, but the Calgary Flames sniper is sure to be one of the most sought after rental players as the NHL trade deadline approaches. His playoff performances are well documented, and for a team looking for scoring help, Cammalleri should be near the top of their list.
Brian Costello of The Hockey News believes that Calgary’s top trade assets is destined for one of the three California teams. Given the struggles of the Pacific Conference in general lately, a move to a struggling squad like the Los Angeles Kings certainly would make sense.
Costello also reports what the Flames will be looking for in exchange for their assistant captain: “Calgary is seeking either a first-round pick and a B-list prospect, or a second-round pick and an A-list prospect.”
Compared to what Gath Snow is probably looking for in return for Vanek, that certainly makes Cammalleri seem like a bargain. Calgary would likely have to eat a bit of his contract for any contender to take him on, but that will only increase the pieces that are coming back to the Flames.
One the Olympic roster freeze ends at the end of the month, GMs will have all of 10 days to wheel and deal. It’s shaping up to be an interesting patch of time leading up to the home stretch of the regular season.
