What?! But the 2014 Sochi Olympics have gotten off to a flawless start!
Vitaly Mutko, the sports minister of Russia, announced Friday that his country won’t make a bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
According to Mutko, who spoke just hours before the opening ceremony in Sochi, Russia is already busy enough with the hosting duties for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 University Games:
There’s no talk of a bid for a new Olympics at the moment. We are all busy until 2019 in the good sense of the word, we have so many major events in the country (Inside the Games).
So who is the running for the 2024 Games? While Toronto has evidently backed out as a potential host city, there’s been momentum building for Washington D.C. to make a bid. (You know the movement has some serious weight behind it since there is not only a website, but there is a website with a hashtag in its title. Man, you’ve just got to respect that branding. #DC2024, y’all!)
Durban, Paris, Doha, and Rome are also considering bids.
