MB Rumors: Baltimore Orioles interested in Ervin Santana

The market for pitchers in baseball seemed to have been set by the deal Matt Garza landed with the Milwaukee Brewers, as his deal will now be the max deal teams look at in terms of getting a good feel for what they think they should pay a free agent arm.

One of those free agent arms is Ervin Santana, and the Garza deal has caused the former Angels and Royals starter to significantly lower his asking price this winter. As a result of showing his willingness to ask for a reasonable contract, Chris Cotillo is reporting that the Baltimore Orioles are now interested in Santana and are kicking the tires on a potential deal.

This hardly means a deal is set or that the Orioles are going to be hot after Santana. He hasn’t been bombarded with the offers he may have been expecting, but landing in Baltimore with a reasonable contract is hardly a bad thing for Santana.

What if a team doesnt want to sign Ervin because of losing a 1st round pick. Could the Royals get him for a cheap 1 year contract? Or would he sit out the year?

I suspect he would take the money and play. Sitting out doesn’t really help him in the long run. He’s not going to get a better deal in a year when his body is that much older. Heck, if his asking price gets much cheaper the Royals are very likely to get into the mix.
