Just before the start of the games, United States star Shaun White pulled out of the 2014 Winter Olympics snowboarding slopestyle event due to some safety concerns on the ice, but the Americans were still able to bring home a gold for the country. In a huge upset, Team USA’s Sage Kotsenburg was able to edge out Norway’s Staale Sandbech, who won the silver medal, and bronze medalist Mark McMorris of Canada, who entered the event as the favorite. The men’s snowboarding slopestyle gold medal was the first to be handed out in Sochi and Kotsenburg becomes the first American to win the opening event of a Winter Olympics since 1952 .
