Michael Sam comes out: LB Donovan Bonner praises his former teammate

On Sunday, we learned that former Missouri Tigers All-American defensive end Michael Sam finally wanted to come out and announce to the world that he is indeed gay. While in today’s day and age this shouldn’t be that blockbuster of an announcement, the fact of the matter is that it is given the society we live in.

What we also learned from the news is that his teammates at Mizzou had also known for quite some time now. One of those teammates, linebacker Donovan Bonner who played aside Sam all of this season in the Tigers’ improbable run through the SEC, immediately offered up some thoughts of praise of the actions of his former teammate this evening.

Bonner is completely correct. It does in fact take a tremendous amount of courage for Sam to do what he did, especially at such a crucial time in his life and career with the NFL Draft directly ahead.

And he’s also correct about the way the entire Missouri football administration handled all of this. Because of their discretion and acceptance, Sam was able to do what he did tonight on his own terms.
