The New york Islanders have been at the center of many trade rumors and whispers as star winger Thomas Vanek and defenseman Andrew McDonald are on the trade block and according to Newsday there is “little chance” either is with the club beyond the March 5 trade deadline.
Vanek is in Sochi as he is the headliner for Team Austria at the Olympics and has already been traded once this season, so he is aware of the circumstances he currently finds himself in.
“What I learned from the first time around,” Vanek said, referring to his Oct. 27 trade from the Sabres to the Islanders, “is that it can happen at any time. I wasn’t too focused or worried about [Friday's roster freeze]. I put myself in this situation, so this [uncertainty] is a part of it. I take it game by game here as I guess all of us should.”
McDonals, however isn’t as comfortable hearing his name bandied about in trade talks after spending his entire career with the Islanders. “It’s not exactly what you want to be going through,” said MacDonald. … “I’m an Islander and this is where I want to be.”
When the Olympic break ends you can expect to see Vanek and McDonald moved. The only question remaining is where the two will be playing the rest of the 2013-2014 season.
