If you watch the luge athletes fly down the course in the Winter Olympics, there is no doubt in your mind that you have to be a special kind of bad ass to go cruising down a sheet of ice with very little protection.
We can all witness the luge course as outsiders, but we may never know just how terrifying it truly is until we are sitting on a sled and preparing to shoot down the course.
Since I don’t plan on doing that any time soon, a brilliant photo from John David Mercer of USA Today Sports from the 2014 Sochi Games will be the closest I ever get to seeing what the luge athletes are staring down.
The photo shows a perfect reflection off of the mask of Italy’s Armin Zoeggeler as he prepares to launch off.
I think I will continue to wonder what it is like rather than attempt it one day.
