Ted Agu, a defensive lineman for the California Golden Bears, passed away last Friday morning following a conditioning drill and the school will hold a candlelight service honoring Agu on Wednesday evening.
Per the San Francisco Chronicle:
“A candlelight vigil for fallen Cal football player Ted Agu will be held Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. on Goldman Plaza outside Memorial Stadium. The ceremony is being led by Agu’s fraternity, Omega Psi Phi. Gates 3 and 5 at the stadium will open at 6 p.m. The first 1,000 participants will receive candles and special wristbands.”
Agu was only a junior and the public health major will be sorely missed on and off the field.
Former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford who was with the team when Agu walked on in 2010 reacted to the news and spoke to the character of his former player.
“I can’t tell you how sad that makes me feel,” he said. “He was a great young man, a guy who epitomized everything about a scholar-athlete. Just a tremendously hard worker, cared about his teammates. Would do anything for the team. Definitely a very sad day.”
