While the NBA’s trade deadline can be a season-changing time frame for teams, so can the days after the deadline.
Multiple teams are expected to trade big salaried players, like the Phoenix Suns, who are doing what they can to rid themselves of Emeka Okafor and his contract.
The likelihood of a team acquiring Okafor and keeping him is quite small, so it’s very possible he (or any other player in a similar scenario) will agree to a buyout so they aren’t stuck on a team who isn’t interested in playing them. Of course, that also gives said player the opportunity to find a role on a playoff team and that’s apparently what the Washington Wizards are hoping for.
While the Wiz are said to be in the market for a point guard, Nate Duncan of Basketball Insiders believes Washington may look to the post-deadline free agent pool to see if anybody is available.
Obviously it’s not known what players will be available, so it’s impossible to speculate who they would have interest in.
The Miami Heat are said to be taking a similar approach.
