Team USA Captain Tom Watson spoke at the Northern Trust Open about the upcoming Ryder Cup.*
At the press conference, Watson named Hall of Famer Ray Floyd as one of his assistant captains. Floyd captained the 1989 U.S. Ryder Cup Team, and was a member of the victorious team in 1993 when Tom Watson chose Floyd as a captain’s pick.
Andy North is also an assistant captain to Watson.
As Watson spoke about the upcoming Ryder Cup, it was evident how much the event means to him. In 1993, Watson said he paired Payne Stewart with Raymond Floyd, and it was one of the key decisions he made. When Watson spoke to Mickey Mantle one time, Mantle told him the Ryder Cup “was the greatest sporting event he had ever seen.”
Ray Floyd joined the press conference via telephone, and said his job will be to uplift the players’ spirits, and make sure they are comfortable coming to him with questions.
Watson will make three captain’s picks on September 2nd. He said he wants players who can “make that five-footer to win or tie,” and who make every shot count.
The experience of Watson, Floyd, and North will be a great benefit to the American team. They will be able to relate to the players through personal experience, and their vast knowledge of golf.
*The Ryder Cup will be played in Perthshire, Scotland at Gleneagles Golf Club from September 26th to 28th.
