One day after news surfaced that Luiz de Franca, a 3-0 Brazilian welterweight, was murdered inside of his gym in Natal, Brazil, another Brazilian fighter has been gunned down in the same city.
Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com passed along the report that Guilherme “Kioto” Matos Rodrigues (19-9) was shot at a juice shop with some teammates on Tuesday night.
Rodrigues, a member of the Pitbull Brothers fight team, later died during surgery.
“I can’t imagine why someone would do that to him,” Rodrigues’ teammate and former Bellator champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire told MMAFighting.com. “He was a handsome guy, everybody knew who he was, so maybe someone was jealous of him.
“He trains with me for 12 years, and I never saw him getting trouble with anyone.”
Pitbull is still trying to understand how something like this could happen to his teammate and friend.
“Guilherme was in the best time of his life now,” he said. “He just majored in Physical Education and kept fighting. Everything he did was work and train. I have no idea who would do a brutality like that to him.”
Police say that there is no suspect at this time.
