The ink has hardly dried on the paperwork the Cleveland Cavaliers sent the NBA’s league office to acquire Luol Deng in a trade last month and now it’s a possibility Deng could be on the move again.
Despite a three game win streak, the Cavaliers know that re-signing Luol Deng at season end won’t be easy. Reports have surfaced that Deng isn’t likely to return next season and the Cavs understandably don’t want to lose him for nothing at season end, especially after parting with a handful of draft picks.
That’s why Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio believes Cleveland may be open to trading Deng before the NBA’s trade deadline.
I think Griffin will explore getting some depth. I also think flipping Luol Deng is a real possibility. Deng could result in a big trade. And as I reported repeatedly (and is now official since Woj wrote it, too), other GMs really like Griffin and are very open to dealing with him.
Deng seems to be the Cavaliers biggest, most realistic trade piece and will likely bring back some high quality talent.
It’s certainly a bit odd to suggest the Cavaliers being open to trading Deng so soon, but time is of the essence – especially if they’re concerned about re-signing him at season end.
