Sochi Olympics: Sven Kramer withdraws from 1500m

After winning gold in the men’s 5000m earlier in the 2014 Winter Olympics, Sven Kramer has decided to skip one of his final planned events. Kramer was planning to participate in the men’s 1500m later this week, but the Associated Press is reporting he will skip the event.

Kramer confirmed the news himself on social media, stating he wants to shift his focus to two other events.

The Netherlands are a speedskating powerhouse, so Kramer has a good chance of earning his sixth Olympic medal and third gold medal of his career.

He has struggled to bring home a gold medal in the 10,000-meter race in the past, but perhaps taking on one less event will allow Kramer to compete at his best and finally top that podium as well.
