Gregg Williams has returned to running an NFL defense as he’s been tasked with running the unit in St. Louis for Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams. This carries a lot of significance due to the fact that Williams was an integral part of the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal from a few seasons ago which saw his first stint with the team cut short by his suspension.
Still, Jeff Fisher hired him back, but as he said in the press conference on Thursday, not before he consulted with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about the move.
“I had a conversation with the commissioner who not only endorsed Gregg, but felt that [hiring] Gregg would be a good move,” Fisher said.
Fisher actually reached out to Goodell back in January after the regular season was completed because he didn’t like the direction that his defense was going under Tim Walton.
He certainly made the smart move in hiring Williams, who is a talented coordinator, but he made an even smarter move by making sure it was okay with the commish first.
