NBA Rumors: Oklahoma City Thunder interested in signing Rudy Fernandez

The NBA season is reaching its halfway point and while the trade deadline is dominating the rumor circuit, some international players are starting to heat up in terms of their popularity with teams stateside. One such player is former NBA guard Rudy Fernandez, who is playing currently for Real Madrid in Spain.

Real Madrid, which has Chicago Bulls prospect Nikola Mirotic on its roster, just won the Spanish Cup and has helped rejuvenate NBA interest in Rudy Fernandez. Thanks to his part in leading the team in more than one way, HoopsHype is reporting that the Oklahoma City Thunder are showing an interest in signing Fernandez this season.

The fantastic run may have a downside for Real, though. The strong play of the team’s stars has not gone unnoticed in the NBA. With Nikola Mirotic, the tournament MVP, already widely presumed to be leaving for Chicago next season, now comes news of renewed interest in Rudy Fernandez from the States, with Oklahoma City being one of the teams inquiring about his contract situation, according to a source.

The Thunder using their full mid-level exception on Fernandez would put them over the luxury tax threshold which may be a problem.

Still, there is renewed NBA interest in Rudy Fernandez that will likely carry over to contract offers this summer.

“One such player is former NBA guard Rudy Fernandez, who failed to find work this summer and is playing currently for Real Madrid in Spain.” This is incorrect, Rudy Fernandez signed a long-term contract with Real Madrid in 2012 and has been playing there since. He is also one of the highest paid players in Europe currently (from what I read on Hoopshype about $4 million per year).
