Teemu Selanne injury update: Finnish captain leaves game early

Teemu Selanne left Finland’s Olympic-opening game against Austria today in the first period with an apparent neck injury. The Finns managed to take down Austria by an 8-4 final, and the biggest concern moving forward wasn’t how they allowed the underdog to score four goals.

It was the health of their captain and fearless leader in Selanne.

While there were some tense moments during the game for Finland, they were greeted with good news once they got back to the locker room following their victory. Selanne’s injury doesn’t appear to be serious, and he should be ready to play in Finland’s next contest.

His teammates even had a sense of humor about their captain getting forced out of the contest early.

Selanne doesn’t have the jump in his step that he used to, but he’s still an important part of Finland’s forward contingent. The team is already short-handed due to Valtteri Filppula and both Mikko and Saku Koivu not being able to play in the tournament. Losing Selanne might have been too much to overcome, even for a chippy team like Finland.
