Shoulder inflammation seems to be the pitching ailment of the spring, and it’s only one day old.
As the Mariners, Phillies, and other teams report issues with pitchers suffering from arm injuries, the Athletics have joined that mix as they announce that reliever Ryan Cook is suffering from shoulder inflammation.
Jane Lee of MLB.com reported the injury first, but also said that manager Bob Melvin believes the right-hander will still be ready for opening day. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says that the 26-year old Cook will be shut down for one week.
Ryan Cook has emerged as one of the more dominant relievers in the division over the last two years with Oakland, earning an All-Star game appearance in 2012. Last season, he posted a 6-4 record with a 2.54 ERA with 9 strikeouts per nine innings. In 2013, he projects to be a set-up man for Jim Johnson alongside Sean Doolittle.
