Last weekend, former Missouri Tigers standout Michael Sam came out to the world as a homosexual athlete. He is now on his way to becoming the first openly gay athlete in the NFL and he has received plenty of public support, but some comments from his father made it seem like he was not supportive of his son.
Sam’s father had said that he didn’t feel the NFL was ready for a gay athlete among other things you can read here, but he is now saying that he was “terribly misquoted” in those reports and that he loves his son unconditionally.
“My son did the right thing, and I am not against him at all,” Sam Sr. told the Galveston County Daily News. “He has made a great statement in coming out, and that he should be able to play in the NFL. I love him unconditionally. … Once he gets on the field and hits [someone] once, they won’t think he’s gay.”
The New York Times stands by their previous quotes from Sam Sr., but at least it is good to see Sam’s father coming forward and showing some support for his son — even if he was initially taken back by the news.
