Who doesn’t love pizza? Better yet – who doesn’t like having the ability to carry around a pizza at all times with them? Okay, maybe that’s a little far stretched but the United States military is nearing completion on research and development that will allow a pizza to last for three years – as long as it stays in its original package.
The pizza doesn’t need to be frozen nor does it need to be refrigerated, simply left in it’s packaging it will last three years and possibly longer.
The military has been working on the invention for quite some time at the request of soldiers who have suggested they’d like the option to eat pizza, a staple in the diet of most.
Researchers at a U.S. military lab in Massachusetts are closing in on a recipe that doesn’t require any refrigeration or freezing.
‘‘You can basically take the pizza, leave it on the counter, packaged, for three years and it’d still be edible,’’ said Michelle Richardson, a food scientist at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center.
The big question – how does it taste? Well, I’m not sure we have that answer yet – though it can’t be much worse than the frozen varieties at your local grocery store.
