MLB Rumors: Seattle Mariners ‘touch base’ with Ervin Santana, Ubaldo Jimenez

On Thursday afternoon, we were told the Seattle Mariners put their contract talks with slugger Nelson Cruz ‘on hold’.

It was a bit odd considering Cruz and the Mariners have had mutual interest for quite some time. Granted, there were issues standing in the way of a deal but last week, multiple respected insiders suggested a deal between the two was imminent.

Soon after the talks between Seattle and Cruz were halted, rumors began to leak that the Mariners were looking for a starting pitcher and according to Ken Rosenthal, have ‘touched base’ with free agents Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez.

#Mariners have touched base on Santana and presumably Jimenez as well. Like #Orioles, seem to be surveying market, seeking best opportunity.

Could it be the Mariners just doing their due diligence? Or is there more to the report considering the Mariners have (at least right now) decided to keep their money in their pocket and opted not to give it to Cruz?

Both Santana and Jimenez have to be itching to get a deal done considering spring training has began for most clubs, including the Mariners.

If Santana would of been willing to meet in the middle (3 yrs, 40 mil) he would still be a Royal. Its a shame his agent really thought he could initially get 115 million dollars. If Santana really loved KC the way he said he did, he would of told his agent to get him the best deal to stay in KC. Instead DM had to move on and end up signing Vargas which none of the fans were excited about. Santana knew the Royals wanted to keep him when they did not trade him at the deadline last year.
