The center position is always a topic of discussion around the NHL Trade Deadline. It is such an important position and many teams look to add depth there if they are in line to make a playoff push. This year, it should be no different. However, teams looking for centers might find it hard to acquire those centers.
Why? There are not that many centers that have been openly discussed in trade rumors. That means that teams that might trade a center could potentially ask for more because of the small market.
That being said, that hasn’t stopped Tim Kavanagh of ESPN.com from listing who he thinks are the top five centers available. All five names have been talked about, some more than others.
Here is Kavanagh’s top five list of centers.
1. David Legwand – Nashville Predators
Legwand has spent his entire career with Nashville and it would be quite surprising to see him wearing another jersey.
2. Steve Ott – Buffalo Sabres
Pretty much everyone in Buffalo is involved in trade rumors so it’s not surprising to see him on the list. For a team to have two different captains and to trade both during the same season would be at least a little funny.
3. Sam Gagner – Edmonton Oilers
It definitely looks like Gagner is playing in his swan song with the Oilers. There has already been one pretty big rumor surrounding Gagner which would have sent him to the Los Angeles Kings. That could just be the first of many.
4. Olli Jokinen – Winnipeg Jets
The Jets have gone from a team that looked out of it under Claude Noel to a team that will challenge for a playoff spot under Paul Maurice. That might prevent Jokinen from being moved.
5. Nazem Kadri – Toronto Maple Leafs
When Kadri wasn’t playing well, trade rumors were all he could hear. Now that he is playing well once again, it would have to be a pretty good return for the Leafs to deal him.
