Reto Berra will be in net for Switzerland when they take on Sweden today. In a Winter Olympic tournament that has been chock full of questionable roster decisions by a handful of coaches, this one sticks out as particularly odd. Jonas Hiller just shutout Latvia in what could be characterized as an easier matchup than Sweden, yet he’ll take a seat on the bench as Berra starts against a superior team.

While keeping your goalies fresh during the preliminary round is obviously an important facet of Olympic play, logic seems to dictate that the Swiss got their goaltending rotation backwards. Berra hasn’t been as strong as Hiller in the NHL by a wide margin, so it could be argued that he should have been in net against Latvia.
No matter, Berra will make his Olympic debut against a Swedish team than ran up the score on Austria in their first game of the tournament. It’ll be interesting to see if the Calgary Flames netminder can match his NHL debut performance, which was a stellar showing against the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in the season.
