This matchup between the United States and Russia isn’t for a medal, but the atmosphere will be absolutely electric as two of the world’s hockey superpowers clash in Sochi. In their first contest of the 2014 Winter Olympics men’s ice hockey tournament, the Americans decisively dismantled the Slovakian team by a 7-1 final.
Slovakia isn’t a bad hockey team. The US was just quicker and hungrier after a sleepy first period. Similarly, the Russians won their first contest without there being much question about the final result for a majority of the contest. Alex Ovechkin scored 77 seconds into the game on his first shifts, and the Russians never really looked back.
Now these two medal hopefuls will square off in a prelim matchup that could decide who gets the first-round bye and who has to play their way in with an extra victory. Looking for viewing information for the contest? Look no further.
