After a brief struggle against Norway in its opener, Team Canada put the pedal to the metal in its second game against Austria on Friday, pummeling the European team 6-0 to move to 2-0 in the preliminary round of the Sochi Winter Olympics tournament.
Defenseman Drew Doughty got the scoring underway for Canada 5:24 into the first period, but it was Jeff Carter who stole the show in the second period.
Carter scored three straight goals — a natural hat-trick –in a 12 minute span to put the game away for Canada. Linemate Patrick Marleau recorded the primary assist on all three of Carter’s goal. Shea Weber and Ryan Getzlaf also scored for Canada.
Goaltender Roberto Luongo made 23 saves for Canada in his first start of the Tournament. Canada has allowed just one goal in two games thus far.
Team Canada next plays on Sunday against unbeaten Finland. The team from Finland beat Norway on Friday to move to 2-0 in preliminary play.
