Sochi Olympics: U.S. Speedskating team to change uniforms amid controversy

The United States Speedskating team debuted new uniforms going into the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic games, uniforms that were tested like motion capture suits used in production of films, music videos and video games.

But once the team began to struggle and favored Olympians were falling towards the back of the pack, eyebrows began to raise.

Some believed the new technology in the Olympic suits – which featured a vent for heat – was creating drag on the skaters. Because of that, the team will now drop the new duds and revert to the old uniforms they wore during the World Cup.

Per Darren Rovell of ESPN:

US speed skating team seeking to revert back to Under Armour suits worn at World Cup in January. IOC must approve.

Rovell later tweeted that the uniforms had been approved by the IOC:

Told that the IOC has approved the older Under Armour suits that the US speed skaters want to revert to

It might a case of ‘too little, too late’ for the United State’s speedskating team though as multiple favorites like Shani Davis have struggled (though Davis did not blame his suit for his poor placing).
