Emilio Bonifacio finds home with Cubs

A surprising team has signed a player surprisingly designated for assignment.

When Bruce Chen re-signed with the Kansas City Royals, Emilio Bonifacio was the one who was removed from the 40-man roster. He discovered he had been designated while playing in the Winter League. It had been speculated that he wouldn’t be without a job for long, and he has finally been signed.

Bonifacio’s designation was a surprise as many viewed him as a key member of the Royals after being acquired via trade from Toronto. In 42 games with Kansas City, he hit .285/.352/.348 while primarily manning shortstop and third base. Bonifacio will likely compete for time at third base for Chicago. He had also been linked to the Baltimore Orioles.
