It’s a question that gets asked every year. Sometimes, it’s an easy decision, sometimes it’s not, and sometimes, the matter is taken out of the manager’s hands.

John Fay put up a piece at Cincinnati.com summing up new manager Bryan Price’s decision.

[I] have an idea what I want to do. I’d like to make sure that our guys are healthy. We know Mat’s been banged up. Johnny has been the man and continues to be. But we’e got to make sure he’s healthy. Homer’s turned his corner.

Referring to Mat Latos as ‘banged up’ is a slight understatement. The righty underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Friday morning. Johnny Cueto has been the staff ace for the last two seasons, but has suffered through oblique injuries that have severely limited his appearances and performance. Right now, Homer Bailey is the only one healthy enough with a decent track record of the three pitchers mentioned. Bailey also happens to be a source of rumors and speculation as he is eligible to be a free agent at the end of the year.
