Viktor Ahn, previously known as Ahn Hyun-Soo of South Korea, was representing Russia in the 2014 Winter Olympics after a fallout with the Korean short track team. After the men’s short track 1000m in Sochi, the move paid off for the host nation with Ahn delivering a gold medal.
The win was Ahn’s fourth gold medal of his career, which ties an individual record for men’s short track skaters.
Ahn also becomes the first man to win a gold medal for two distinct countries at the Winter Olympics.
The silver medal went to Vladimir Grigorev, also of Russia, as the host nation vaulted to the top of the overall medal count. Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands won silver to give the Dutch yet another medal on the track in the Sochi Games.
