The UFC is back in Brazil for UFC Fight Night 36. The card features two critical bouts in the Middleweight division that have major title implications. In the main event, Lyoto Machida meets Gegard Mousasi in a battle of former Light Heavyweight champions. The co-main event will feature the former StrikeForce Middleweight champion, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, taking on the streaking Francis Carmont. Before the four aforementioned fighters take center stage, the UFC has set up a solid preliminary card on UFC Fight Pass. Felipe Arantes vs Maximo Blanco
Blanco came out firing in the first round. After working Arantes’ body, Blanco got a nice double leg takedown on the fence. Arantes got to his feet and was throwing a bevy of strikes. Blanco hurt Arantes to the body again on the fence, but Arantes was firing back. Arantes dropped Blanco late, but Blanco fought back to his feet after defending a rear naked choke. Exciting first round. Round 2 was mostly contested on the feet. Blanco lost a lot of his aggressiveness in this round. Arantes landed a nice head kick with about two minutes to go. Blanco got a takedown, but did nothing with it and the ref stood them up. The third round started at a fast pace, but Blanco threw a blatant low kick that produced a terrible shudder on impact. Referee Mario Yamasaki deducted a point from Blanco for the low blow. Blanco came out firing and got a takedown. Arantes almost locked up an armbar, could not get it, and got to his feet. Arantes got a takedown momentarily as well. The fight stalled on the fence for the rest of the round.

Ildemar Alcantara vs Albert Tumenov
Quick start to the fight as both men land body shots. Tumenov was cracked by a 2-1 combination from Alcantara. Tumenov dropped Alcantara, but let him back to his feet. Alcantara immediately shot in for a big takedown, and landed right into side control. Tumenov hit a beautiful reversal and landed in guard and punished Alcantara with brutal ground and pound. Alcantara got to his feet, but ate huge shots and got another takedown. Round 2 started with barrages from both men and Alcantara got a body lock takedown off the fence. Alcantara landed some big ground and pound, and had back control momentarily. Tumenov was able to get to his feet, but was forced on the fence by Alcantara. The ref broke them off the cage and Alcantara hit a double leg takedown. Big round for Alcantara. The first half of Round 3 was contested on the feet, but the pace had slowed significantly. Tumenov landed a nice counter right hook. Alcantara stunned Tumenov with a 2-1 once again. Neither man could get a significant advantage in the third round.

Douglas Silva vs Zubaira Tukhugov
The first round was mostly contested on the feet. Tukhugov landed a nice spinning back fist, but it was partially blocked. Moments later, Silva clipped Tukhugov and rushed in, but ate a big counter left hook that cut him wide open on his forehead. The doctor checked the cut, but the fight continued. Towards the end of the round, Tukhugov got a big takedown and landed some ground and pound. Round 2 had a much slower pace as both men’s gas tanks were wearing thin. Tukhughov almost hit a nice fireman’s carry takedown, but Silva defended well. Tukhugov was controlling the standup, but nothing of worth was landing. Round 3 actually picked up the pace midway through the round as both men were throwing big shots that got the crowd fired up. Silva landed a solid head kick, but Tukhugov walked right thru it. Tukhugov again was controlling the stand up, picking Silva apart from the outside. Silva finally opened up a bit on the feet, but it was too little too late for the Brazilian.
