New York Yankees skipper Joe Girardi and a split squad roster will travel to Panama City, Panama in March to take on the Miami Marlins in a two game Spring Training series.
The series is in honor of former long-time New York Yankee closer, Mariano Rivera. It’s going to be completely different seeing someone else running out from the bullpen to slam the door shut on opposing batters from here on out.
Yeah we’ve seen a couple guys step in whenever Mariano was hurt, but the guy always came back and continued to do his job well. This time around, Rivera will be watching from home instead of in the bullpen or dugout.
Now according to NJ.com, Joe Girardi doesn’t know which New York Yankees players will be joining him for the two game set.
“Obviously, we’re going to take a team that represents very well. But we also have games here.” Girardi via NJ.com.
I’m sure teammates like Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter will travel with the team and play in one game out of respect for their former teammate. I wouldn’t be surprised if some other New York Yankee greats attend the series.
