The Muppets Family lost one of their own today as John Henson, the son of Muppets creator Jim Henson and his wife Jane Henson has died of a sudden massive heart attack at just 48 years of age.
The sad news was confirmed on Saturday afternoon via The Jim Henson Company’s Official Facebook Page.
It is with great sadness that we confirm that John Henson, son of Jim and Jane Henson and brother to Lisa, Cheryl, Brian and Heather, died at age 48 of a sudden massive heart attack on Friday, February 14, while at home with his daughter. John served as a shareholder and board member of The Jim Henson Company. He leaves two daughters, Katrina (15) and Sydney (10) and his wife Gyongyi. A private service is being planned.”
Most people wouldn’t recognize Henson by his face; however, they would definitely recognize him in character. Henson has played the role of the giant, fuzzy Muppet named Sweetums from 1996 until 2005. Henson originally took over the character for former performer Richard Hunt in body only during the filming of Muppet*vision 3D as Hunt’s health was beginning to deteriorate. After Hunt’s passing, Henson took over the role in both body and voice.
One would hope that with the impending release of the latest Muppets film entitled Muppets Most Wanted, one would hope that they would find a way to honor the fallen member of the Muppets family.
We don’t have to wait much longer to find out.
Muppets Most Wanted is scheduled to be released on March 21, 2014.
