NASCAR’s annual speed week kicked off on Saturday night with the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona International Speedway, the exhibition race that is held every year the week before the Daytona 500. Usually these races don’t have too much excitement because it is only an exhibition, but Saturday was the exception.
Following a nine-car wreck, the Pace Car, a Chevrolet SS, caught fire while leading the cars around the track on the pace laps. Thankfully no one was injured, and there was a pace car on hand. You can check it out for yourself in the video below.
After the smoke was cleared, and the damaged Pace Car was taken away, Denny Hamlin wound up victorious in the Sprint Unlimited exhibition race. The 2014 NASCAR season kicks off next Sunday with The Great American Race, the Daytona 500.
