The Los Angeles Lakers don’t have a lot of options when it comes to trading Pau Gasol, mostly due to his albatross of a salary.
At $19 million, Gasol is difficult to trade in a normal scenario, but given the Lakers aren’t interested in adding salary beyond the season and are looking for youth/draft picks, their options are few and far between. Because of this, SportingNews believes the Suns are in position to make the Lakers the best offer for Gasol:
Phoenix does not want to bring in four rookies next season, though, and would be willing to make a move. Because Gasol has a $19 million contract, it is difficult to match up his salary in such a way that the Lakers would not add future salary. The Suns are in position to make the best (if not only) offer to the Lakers, so look for the sides to come back to the table.
If the Lakers were willing to take on salary moving forward, they’ve have a much bigger market available to trade Gasol. However, because they’re not, there are only a few large expiring contracts available in the market – even less with any youth/draft picks that could be attached.
