The Swedish Olympic Hockey Team is obviously hurt by the injury that will keep Henrik Zetterberg out of the rest of the Olympic Break. However, the team that is more hurt is the Detroit Red Wings.
If Zetterberg needs surgery to repair the herniated disc he suffered, he will be out for the rest of the season. Obviously, that would hurt the Red Wings. He is their captain and he provides a lot of their offense. The loss of Zetterberg could cripple the Red Wings if other players don’t step up to compensate.
Ansar Khan of Michigan Live had a Q & A with his readers and most of the questions were about what the Red Wings would do if Zetterberg is in fact out for the season.
Khan believed that the Red Wings would stand pat at the Deadline before the Zetterberg injury as they are very close to the salary cap and will be even closer when Stephen Weiss comes off injured reserve. Any deal would have to be money-for-money. Now Zetterberg going to injured reserve would open up some money.
Khan believes that the Red Wings could have talks concerning the scorers that are available, those being Matt Moulson, Thomas Vanek, Mike Cammalleri and Brad Boyes. However, with the low amount of sellers in the market right now, a deal will be difficult to make for the Red Wings.
The Red Wings have the longest playoff streak going at over 20 years. If they don’t want that streak to end they might have to make a tough decision if Zetterberg is out for the season.
