Sochi Olympics: USA vs. Russia Men's Hockey Game Most Watched Game in NBCSN History

The numbers are in for Saturday’s Sochi Olympics preliminary round classic between the United States and Russia, and those in the hockey world can’t help but be thrilled with what they saw. The NBC Sports Network averaged 4.1 million viewers for Saturday’s game, setting a record for the most watched hockey game in the network’s history.

The viewership numbers peaked at 6.4 milion between 10-10:30 a.m ET.

“The telecast of Team USA’s memorable men’s hockey victory led NBCSN to its best-ever daytime viewership (2.9 million viewers) and marked the third consecutive weekend day that NBCSN set a viewership record after last weekend’s milestone openingSaturday and Sunday telecasts of the Sochi Games,”  said representatives from the network via press release.

The game which was also the most streamed game in NBC Sports history, was viewed the most in Minneapolis which had a 15.7 rating locally. After Minneapolis, the top 10 local markets in the country include Denver, Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, Ft. Myers, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Buffalo, Boston and Seattle.

And people say hockey has no following in the USA…

Sure, it’s unlikely that this high amount of viewers will carry over in full once the NHL gets back underway after the games conclude, but you have to expect that there will be some carryover. If the fans love what they are seeing in the Olympics, then the regular ratings should get a boost, if only for a brief period of time.
